The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is a United
Nations (UN) program that provides immediate assistance and long term
humanitarian and developmental aid to children and mothers in developing
countries.
UNICEF and our country's Department of Social Welfare and
Development, recently joined hand-in-hand to give the most affected region of
the recent Super Typhoon Yolanda, notably Eastern Samar, a 153-M cash assistance
through an Emergency Unconditional Cash Transfer Program (UCT). This
supplemental program is a cash grant for the 4Ps family beneficiaries who were
devastated by the Super typhoon Yolanda andi s aimed to assist beneficiaries in
their immediate recovery and in sustaining their basic needs.
During the launching of the said program held at Eastern
Samar State University in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, it was announced that almost
6,000 DSWD Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries from Eastern
Samar especially those from the municipalities of Guiuan, Hernani, Mercedes,
Balangkayan, and Salcedo; received an amount of 4,400Php for the month of July
and will continue to receive the same amount of monthly cash grant until
December of this year.
Charles Parks of UNICEF said:"The loss of property,
savings, and livelihood as a result of Super Typhoon Yolanda, makes it
difficult to provide basic necessities for their children. Through the
collaboration of UNICEF (UCT) and DSWD (4Ps) we aim to reach more children and
families in the most direct way possible, including advancing their rights to
fulfill their immediate recovery needs."
"Hindi po talaga namin alam ang gagawin namin ng
dumating at dumaan ang super typhoon na Yolanda sa lugar namin. Nagpapasalamat
po kami at nandyan kaagad ang DSWD para tulungan kami at ngayon po sa UNICEF
para sa aming pangangailangan na muling nakatayo at makamtan ang inaasam para
sa aming mga pamilya," said Mrs. Grace Rapada, 4Ps and UNICEF UCT
beneficiary.
Through the UCT program, UNICEF greatly supports our
government's Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program and its ongoing
rehabilitation efforts for Typhoon
Yolanda victims. At the same time, the UCT is an appropriate vehicle in
carrying out UNICEF's true purpose to promote the welfare and development of
children.
