DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY GRANTS QBO INNOVATION HUB OF P33 MILLION TO BUILD STRONGER STARTUP ECOSYSTEM IN PH

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato de la Peña and PLDT and PLDT Chairman and CEO and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan reinforced their commitment to Filipino startups at a joint appearance last week sealing DOST’s P33 million grant to QBO Innovation Hub, a public private sector partnership among DOST, the Department of Trade and Industry, J.P. Morgan and IdeaSpace, the innovation foundation of the MVP group. The grant calls for QBO to raise the level of 12 Technology Business Incubators (TBI) around the country. Also present at the event were staunch supporters and partners of QBO Carlos Ma. G. Mendoza, Senior Country Officer for J.P. Morgan Philippines and Patricia Anne Javier-Gutierrez, J.P. Morgan Philippines Head of Communications. 



Working towards the vision of creating over a thousand innovative startups around the country, and seeing the emergence of a Filipino unicorn in the next five years, the grant will support QBO in carrying out a nationwide project to strengthen TBIs. The grant also serves to help them develop more programs that will create an enabling environment for Filipino tech founders to scale their businesses and become globally competitive. 

“I really appreciate that in addition to our own initiatives, we have a collaboration with QBO. The signing of the Innovative Startup Act authorizes us, together with DTI and DICT, to support and assist Filipino startups. So, thank you to IdeaSpace and most especially to QBO for inspiring us to help Filipino startups,” said Secretary de la Peña. 

"It’s about time to focus on science and innovation and there are efforts for that — thanks to DOST," said Pangilinan, who is also the chairman of the board of IdeaSpace Foundation. "We believe that with our stronger commitment, we will be able to put Philippine technopreneurs on par with its regional, if not global, counterparts." 

"The DOST grant recognizes the enormous progress achieved by the public private sector partnership that produced QBO,” said Rene Meily, president of QBO and IdeaSpace. “DOST has been continuously holding activities with QBO, IdeaSpace and other partners to discover the Philippines' next unicorn and we are grateful to them for their support. I hope that the golden era for Philippine startups may be just within reach.” 

DOST has been working side by side with QBO since it was established in 2016. Since its inception, QBO has grown to have more than 5,000 members and over 300 tech startups representing various verticals. On top of implementing hundreds of startup development programs, including mentorship and specialized coaching and consultation sessions that have opened global opportunities for the founders, QBO, together with DOST, DTI, and J.P. Morgan, has also yielded gains in multimillion-peso funding and revenue raised for startups.

TAIWAN CULTIVATES AGRICULTURE 4.0

Besides being a technological hub, Taiwan also has a flourishing agricultural sector. Indeed, just in the first half of 2019, Taiwan's Council of Agriculture reported that the island republic has logged US$2.7B (nearly 140 billion pesos) worth of agricultural exports. 



This number is only expected to grow as the nation recalibrates its agricultural strategy. Taiwan aims to optimize its farming techniques by using high-precision technology as it commits to the Agriculture 4.0 movement.

Agriculture 4.0, or precision farming, refers to a redefined farming system that integrates high-technology innovations. According to the World Government Summit, Agriculture 4.0 is a green agricultural revolution with science and technology at its heart.

In an effort to sustain its growth, the Taiwanese government is currently raising its investments in Agriculture 4.0 with a pledge of up to $300 million by 2020.

To properly implement Agriculture 4.0, the following materials are needed: Solar technology for energy needs, lighting technology as different plants grow best at different wavelengths, drone technology for soil and water modeling purposes, Internet of Things for smart sensors, semiconductors to manufacture sensors, control software and data mining algorithms, and robotics to assist in planting and harvesting.

As a leading tech hub, Taiwan produces thousands of electrical engineers, semiconductor specialists, and robotics experts each year. The workforce then feeds into a supply chain of thousands of enterprises that create the components required in smart farming.

On the industry side, Taiwan is the second largest in the semiconductor industry, as well as a manufacturer for most of the sensors used in IoT and high-tech projects such as robotics, drones and solar technology. Companies have also developed specialized horticulture LEDs that can fine-tune wavelengths to increase plant growth and yield.

Solid examples of smart farming innovations include Owlting, a Taipei-based startup that supplies farmers with big data to optimize operations by monitoring rain, temperature and chemicals in the soil. Another innovation is LeBio's Spectral X, which is a new type of agriculture net that adjusts sunlight and RGB spectrum ratios to improve plant health and growth over time.

A number of Taiwan Excellence awardees also have a range of hi-tech autopilot helicopters made to help farmers. Robotics giant Thunder Tiger has the Thunder Hawk, which can spray pesticides across a hectare of land within eight minutes, greatly improving agricultural efficiency and reducing human and plant exposure to pesticides. Additionally, there's Alpas II, from Geosat Aerospace and Technology, another unmanned drone equipped with computer-controlled flight settings, as well as dual laser sensors, allowing precise and automatic spraying.

By introducing these digital innovations to the farming routine, the expected results are increased yields, reduced operating costs, reduced crop damage and minimized water, fuel and fertilizer usage.

These advantages will also flow to the consumer side as it ensures cheaper yet better quality produce for everyone.

UP ALUMNUS CITED FOR HELPING POULTRY FARMERS

The top executive of Bounty Agro Ventures, Inc. (BAVI) has been cited by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association for helping farmers join the local poultry industry through a broilers grower program.



BAVI president and general manager Ronald Mascariñas received the 2019 UP Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award in Entrepreneurship and Employment Creation from UP President Danilo Concepcion, during ceremonies at Ang Bahay ng Alumni at UP Diliman in Quezon City.

Joining Mascariñas as Distinguished Alumni awardees were Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri (Enterprise Development in Renewable Energy) and Associate Justice Marvic Leonen (Law and Judiciary). The Most Distinguished Alumnus Award was given to former Finance Secretary and Ambassador Edgardo Espiritu.

Also cited "for being a successful 'rags-to-riches' businessman in the country's highly competitive food sector”, Mascariñas graduated with a degree in agriculture from UP Los Baños in Laguna in 1982. He started BAVI’s operations in 2002 and led it to become the country’s top chicken rotisserie chain with retail brands Chooks-to-Go, Uling Roasters, and Reyal.

In 2004, UP Los Baños also named Mascariñas as Most Outstanding Alumnus in Entrepreneurship.

REGINE VELASQUEZ-ALCASID AND SON NATE, TOGETHER IN PINAKA-SWEET JOLLIBEE COMMERCIAL

Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid deeply treasures the relationship she has with her son Nate. The mother-son duo’s sweet connection is put front and center in their newest TV commercial for Jollibee.

Their second commercial together for Jolly Spaghetti, features Regine and Nate’s pinaka-sweet moments as they spend quality time together bonding over the best-tasting (most delicious) Jolly Spaghetti.



Their mother-and-son relationship is full of intimate and loving moments, such as those we see in the video. “He's very sweet,” Regine says of Nate. “He really is malambing ever since. He’s always spending time with me, and our favorite bonding moment is watching TV together. He loves that, and he always wants me to watch what he’s watching.”

Regine shares that they still spend a lot of time together even though Nate is already going to school. “When he doesn't have school, we'll just be in bed together,” she says. “He'll be tinkering with his iPad, then we'll watch TV, then we'll buy Jolly Spaghetti and eat.”


This personal side of Regine and Nate is true to life. She shares that long before they did this commercial, they went to a Jollibee and did something like what they did in the ad. “We went to Jollibee, Nate ordered Jolly Spaghetti for us, we ate and took pictures,” she recounted. “It’s the exact scenario.”
