Top Rank CEO predicts KOs in Pacquiao-Vargas, Donaire-Magdaleno bouts on November 5

There has been a cauldron of activity bubbling in Nevada not only because it is a hotly contested swing state in the 2016 U.S. elections; it’s also because it’s five days to go before Philippine boxing legend and Senator Manny Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38 KOs) coming out of retirement – goes up against World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight Champion Jessie Vargas (27-1,10 KOs).

Joining a Pacquiao-headlined fight for the first time on November 5 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas is Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire (37-3, 24 KOs) who will defend his WBO Super Bantamweight title against the undefeated Jessie Magdaleno (23-0, 17 KOs).

The fight – billed as The Legend vs The Champ -- will be shown on November 6 at 4 a.m. in KSA and 5 a.m. in Dubai, live (with replays) via TFC.tv PPV subscription is at 80 SAR.  The Legend vs. The Champ is also available via OSN, ELife and Mozaic TV Powered by Ooredoo.  In the U.S., it will be shown on November 5 live, distributed by Top Rank PPV.

In a recent interview with Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman on First Take on ESPN, Top Rank Founder and CEO Bob Arum claimed that far from being an easy fight for PacquiaoVargas could end up knocking out the legendary Filipino fighter.

Jessie Vargas has become a terrific fighter,” said Arum. “He has a trainer – Dewey Cooper – that has turned him from being a defensive fighter into an offensive force.  And when he won the world title, he knocked out Sadam Ali who is a terrific fighter, who was a member of the U.S. Olympic team, and he (Vargas) knocked out Ali cold.  Let me tell you something: the way Manny fights and the way Vargas fights, if Vargas hits him – which he is capable of doing – he could knock Pacquiao out. Remember, Vargas had Bradley out in the last round.  The referee stopped the fight by mistake because he thought the 10th second was the bell.”

Arum also told ABS-CBN in another interview: “I think you will see, one way or another, a knockout in this fight.  And it's a lot because Jessie will be fearless, and some people say reckless, and he will be going after Manny, to try and knock Manny out."

Vargas, who is 10 years younger than Pacquiao, said in an interview with ABS-CBN that “It’s my time to shine.  I’m going for a knockout.  The minute that he (Pacquiao) gives me that opening, I’m taking it. The 8th round sounds very, very good to me.”

The bold predictions don’t end with VargasMagdaleno also had daring words to say against Donaire in an ABS-CBN interview.

“He (Donaire) is past his prime. He will be strong for about five rounds. Then he will fade and we will take over,”Magdaleno claimed.  Come fight night, Donaire will be 9 years older than his challenger.  “Maybe I’ll be the real Flash come November 5th,” added Magdaleno.

"I'm proud of that fight (Donaire vs Magdaleno)," Arum added. "I think it's going to be a terrific fight. I think every one of these fights is going to be evenly matched, but I can see where people are saying that Donaire andMagdaleno will be a barn burner."  Arum also noted that while Donaire is an experienced warrior, Magdaleno is “training like a beast”.

Of course, Pacquiao and Donaire are aware of all the macho boasting by their respective opponents.

Senator Manny Pacquiao continues to have the support of celebrity boxing aficionados like Sylvester Stallone and Mario Lopez. (From Sen. Emmanuel Pacquiao’s Instagram)

In an interview with Michelle Joy Phelps of Behind The Gloves, a very relaxed Pacquiao said, “I know him (Vargas) well. He fought in my undercard before so, I know him. I know what I’m going to do in the ring.”

It is interesting to note that the only defeat of Vargas came in the hands of Timothy Bradley who Pacquaio has beaten twice, the last time in April 9 of this year.  However, Bradley’s unanimous decision win over Vargas was questioned after what many people thought was the premature halting of the fight when Vargas almost putBradley out with a devastating punch in the dying seconds of the 12th round on June 27, 2015.

Meanwhile, Donaire is so confident against Magdaleno that he is already looking at career plans beyondNovember 5 which includes leaving the 122-pound super bantamweight class to return to featherweight category.

"The truth is that if I win on November 5th, the next thing I want to do is going against Leo Santa Cruz or Carl Frampton. I'm a warrior and I want the big fights. Expect me in big fights at 126 pounds,” Donaire told Boxing Scene.

With award-winning cases from global brand Catalyst now available at Power Mac Center, you can take all the adventures you want without worrying about your precious devices.

Catalyst is a lifestyle accessories brand that creates products that enable people to explore and share their world. It was founded by climbing partners Josh Wright and June Lai, who designed and developed their own protective cases after seeing that these were not available in the market then.

It recently launched in the Philippines at Power Mac Center Power Plant Mall in Makati City.

DZMM marks 30th anniversary with the launch of “Headline Pilipinas”

DZMM, ABS-CBN’s flagship AM radio station, continues to revolutionize its delivery of news with the launch of the noontime national newscast “Headline Pilipinas,” airing exclusively on DZMM TeleRadyo via TFC, TFC IPTV and TFC.tv

The announcement came as a welcome surprise during the station’s 30th anniversary celebration held recently at the Marriott Grand Ballroom in Pasay City. The celebration of three decades of DZMM was attended by past and present anchors, reporters, and employees of DZMM 630, who became part of the station that was established in 1986 at the end of Martial Law.

ABS-CBN Integrated News & Current Affairs Head Ging Reyes said their latest program offering is a part of DZMM’s continuous evolution to keep Filipinos updated on things that matter to them and to help them make informed decisions in their day-to-day lives.

“We are building upon the gains of TeleRadyo by transforming it into a nationwide platform. This way, DZMM continues to be relevant to our news audiences. Expect stronger programming, more current affairs content, and a fusion of style and substance that will continue to improve as technology evolves and as we become more and more present in the digital space,” she said.

“Headline Pilipinas,” a stand-alone program on DZMM’s news channel on television, TeleRadyo, will be helmed by veteran broadcast journalist Tony Velasquez, together with ABS-CBN Cebu’s Leo Lastimosa and ABS-CBN Davao’s Melanie Severino. They will deliver the latest and most relevant news gathered from all over the country, giving voice to Filipinos from different regions across the country.

Meanwhile, ABS-CBN President and Chief Executive Officer Carlo Katigbak stressed the station’s strong commitment to public service, a core value of the news organization, highlighting DZMM’s many public service programs, including the Teaching Learning Caring (TLC) classroom and clinic-on-wheels that served victims of calamities in the past years.

“We have two larger goals: the first is to stay relevant to our audience and continue to deliver useful information that matter to them by the people that matter to them; our second goal is to fulfill our mission to be in the service of the Filipino people,” Katigbak said.

Other ABS-CBN executives also paid tribute to the men and women who contributed in making DZMM the number one AM radio station in Mega Manila, and TeleRadyo as the number one Filipino news channel on cable.

Charo Santos-Concio, host of “MMK sa DZMM” and ABS-CBN Chief Content Officer said, “maraming dapat ipagdiwang at ipagsalamat kagaya ng inyong husay, sipag, at tibay sa loob ng 30 taon na siyang dahilan bakit patuloy na nagbabaga ang tungkulin nating magsilbi at tumulong sa ating kapamilya.”

Meanwhile, Reyes led a “who’s who” list of attendees at the station’s anniversary party, which featured production numbers by singers Jona, Morissette, Kyla, Imelda Papin, Rico J. Puno, Darren Espanto, Arnel Pineda, Noel Cabangon, Jed Madela and actor Piolo Pascual, who sang in DZMM’s latest station ID.

DZMM anchors Doris Bigornia, Gerry Baja, Anthony Taberna, DJ Richard, Carl Balita, Marc Logan, Gus Abelgas, and Kabayan Noli De Castro also showcased their singing talents. Radyo Patrol Reporters like Angel Movido, Robert Mano and Raya Capulong danced to the hits of the ‘80s to the present, with anchors NiƱa Corpuz, Atty. Claire Castro, Maresciel Yao, Toni Aquino, Jasmin Romero, Neil Badion, DJ Chacha, DJ Bea, Gretchen Fullido, and Ahwel Paz.

DZMM’s 30th anniversary celebration continues with the airing of a documentary titled “30/360”: Kuwento ng DZMM,” which tells of the station’s beginnings, challenges, and its coverage of some of the biggest news and events in Philippine history, as told by DZMM anchors and reporters in the past three decades. Watch “30/630: Kuwento ng DZMM” hosted by Vic de Leon Lima, via TFC.tv Premium and TFC IPTV under the Specials category.

Catch the shows of DZMM and DZMM TeleRadyo daily on TFC (audio channel in the U.S.), TFC IPTV and TFC.tv. Connect with fellow global Kapamilyas by visiting facebook.com/TFCJapan or follow @KapamilyaTFC in Instagram or Twitter.

Meralco’s early holiday gift to customers: lower energy rates for the third consecutive month

Here comes an unexpected “gift” that we can be truly thankful for: Meralco has recently announced that overall electricity rates are lower by 12 centavos per kilowatt hour (kWh).

In fact, Meralco—the Philippines’ leading power distributor—has announced lower electricity rates for residential customers for three straight months, starting August of this year. According to the power company, the rate reduction was caused by downward movements in transmission and generation charges, which significantly affected the amount reflected in our bill.

An average Filipino household consumes around 200 kWh every month, which means that the 12-centavo reduction can translate to at least Php 24.00 off the monthly bill. And these days, the adage “a peso saved is a peso earned” is truer than ever.

Aside from the good news Meralco brought its customers this month, the energy company also received encouraging results of a study done by the International Energy Consultants (IEC), an Australian consulting firm that specializes in Asian power markets.

According to a recent IEC survey, Meralco subscribers enjoyed some of the largest tariff reductions worldwide in the last four years. Dr. John Morris of the IEC mentioned that through Meralco’s overall sourcing strategy, lower systems loss, and a lower distribution charge, their subscribers saved P30 billion in power costs.

There really is nothing like good news to get us started for a joyous holiday season!

VIP Screening of "Shelter" at the Vista Mall Taguig Cinema

Friday October 7, I had a chance to attend the VIP Screening of the movie "Shelter" at the Vista Mall Taguig City. Together with my co-bloggers and best friend Dherl, special guest and representative of National Housing Authority, we all enjoyed the night of the screening, mostly the place it was held.

Shelter is a brilliant film and directorial debut of Paul Bettany who also written it. The film stars Jennifer Connelly and Anthony Mackie. The story is about Hannah (Connelly) and Tahir (Mackie) who fall in love while homeless on the streets of New York. Shelter explores how the two individual got there, how they learn about their pasts and realize that they need each other to build a future.

The movie is very moving, at least for me, because I can see, a Hannah and Tahir in our country. People or family who struggle to have a decent shelter just to survive an everyday life. But everything in life is a choice, if you chose to survive, you will do everything to have a normal life, especially if you have a special someone to be with through it.

As I have said earlier, our movie viewing made more special because it was held at Vista Mall Cinema. A movie theater has comfortable seats, which you can move freely without disturbing anyone. A very spacious and fully air conditioned movie house. The sound also, is indeed great that even breathing of the cast can be heard clearly.

I great thing I love within, is that the location of the comfort rooms, it is very accessible and easy to find. You can locate it immediately, always smells fresh and with enough supply of tissue paper, hand wash and alscohol.

I will definitely go back again and again at Vista Mall Taguig, since it is a one-ride away from our house hehehe...

Shelter will open on October 12 at Vista Mall Cinemas from Crystal Sky Multimedia.
