The 2016 SikatPinoy National Food Fair: A taste of every kitchen corner of the Philippines

How many flavors, textures and ingredients can you distinguish in your favorite Filipino food? How can one province's version of a Pinoy staple look and taste so differently from another region's take on the same type of food? Can't make up your mind on what foodie goodies to give to your balikbayan relative or foreigner guest?  



The Department of Trade and Industry - Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotion (DTI-BDTP) will answer that, and much more, when it holds the 2016 SikatPinoy National Food Fair from March 16 to 20, at Megatrade Halls 1-3 at SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Within that expansive area, over 100 exhibitors from the country’s 18 regions will offer their best-known delicacies and culinary specialties. The food categories include meat, fish and marine products; processed fruits and vegetables; ingredients, sauces and condiments; wines and beverages; coffee, tea, and cocoa' bakery products, snacks and confectioneries; organic, herbal and natural products; and food supplements and vitamins.

Themed “Piling-Piling Pagkaing PIlipino,” the SikatPinoy National Food Fair is part of a series of national trade fairs held by DTI-BDTP to help promising small and medium enterprises (SMEs)—especially those from the regions—reach a wider domestic market and, hopefully, prepare them for the export market. 




In the highly competitive food industry, the key to national and global business success lies in the quality, not the quantity, of the commodity. Towards this end, the selection committee of the SikatPinoy National Food Fair exhausted all of two days to carefully screen potential exhibitors.

DTI-BDTP Dir. Rhodora Leaño explained that during the selection process, representatives from entities such as the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), and the Philippine International Trading Corporation (PITC), sat down as a group to scrutinize each food item.

Products need to be screened using the following criteria: Product quality and safety; packaging and labeling; market potential; and the manufacturer’s production capacity. The screening committee then had to arrive at a consensus on the merits of these items. “Products must achieve a grade of at least 80 percent to be able to make it to the Fair,” Leaño stated.

Leaño urged the public to do the same when they visit the SikatPinoy National Food Fair. "During the five days of the event, exhibitors will offer a lot of product samples. Participate. Try as many as you can, because the Fair also offers the public the opportunity to experience Filipino food done or prepared in new ways."



And for visitors who have a mind to venture into their own business, Leaño revealed that the Fair could help fast track their plans. "We'll have booths of government agencies related to the food industry, like the Food and Drug Administration and the FNRI. We encourage would-be food entrepreneurs to network with these agencies during the Fair, because these are the agencies that such businesses will be eventually dealing with."

Interesting sidelights of the Fair also include competitions for best food packaging and most innovative products, as well as cooking demos.

The SikatPinoy National Food Fair also mirrors trends in the food industry today. Leaño shared that "halal-certified" products are on the rise, both in supply and demand, "and that is what visitors will most likely notice in several items that will be on exhibit," she noted. Halal, an Islamic term, pertains to food that has been sourced, prepared and processed that is permissible under Islamic Shariah law. Halal, in recent times, has expanded its market to meet a global demand for safe and healthy food that even non-Muslim prefer.

And, looking at the bigger picture, Leaño has high hopes for the exhibitors, saying: "What we are ultimately aiming for is to be able to help these small and medium enterprise participants penetrate much bigger markets."

UNICEF launches Children First Storybooks with Anne Curtis

United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), recently launch the Children First Storybooks with UNICEF Celebrity Advocate for Children, Anne Curtis at SM North EDSA supported by SM Cares.



The UNICEF Children First Storybooks is a collection of six books that make reading more enjoyable and enhance children's imagination. The collection talks about different topics from overcoming shyness, cultivating friendships, express oneself, self confidence, better understanding of other feelings and reaching for one's dreams. All are presented in colorful illustration to motivate kids to open the book and read.

UNICEF ambassador Anne Curtis graced the event from the press conference at Lugang Cafe, ribbon cutting of the art exhibit located at the 2nd Floor of SM North EDSA, book reading and signing. The children are very happy with the activities that day specially when Curtis started to read a book included on the collection which she has written, "Anita, the Duckling Diva".



"I am very happy to have written my very first children's book, which I hope can help children particularly  with their self-confidence and self-esteem. I believe that children should be given all the emotional and moral support they need as they grow s they can express themselves with confidence and explore their full talent" Curtis said.

TFC@theMovies marks ‘first’ with international screening of ‘Padre de Familia’

After bringing Filipino films to mainstream European cinemas via “A Second Chance” and opening 2016 with the grand screening of “Everything About Her,” TFC@theMovies creates history anew as it screens CCM Creatives’ critically acclaimed “Padre de Familia” first in the Middle East and Europe.

TFC@theMovies will bring the widely talked about “Padre de Familia,” directed by Adolf Alix Jr.,  to mainstream cinemas starting February 18 in the Middle East (in partnership with Gulf Film) and starting February 20 in Europe.


According to ABS-CBN Europe, Middle East and Africa Managing Director Kai Rodriguez, the milestone screening of “Padre de Familia” is part of ABS-CBN’s continuing mission to reach out to global Filipinos.  Since 1997, ABS-CBN has been retelling the stories of overseas Filipinos (OFs) on film through its movie production and distribution unit Star Cinema.  These films include “Sana Maulit Muli (partly shot in the United States of America)” “Goodbye America (U.S.A.),” “Anak (Hong Kong),” “American Adobo (U.S.A.),” “Caregiver (United Kingdom),” “For the First Time (Greece),” “Milan (Italy),” “Dubai (United Arab Emirates),” “Love Me Again (Australia)” and “In My Life (U.S.).”

“Padre de Familia” is also the first team-up of the Superstar and the Box Office King plus Primetime King.  Both have been, time and again, compared for their humble beginnings, expressive eyes and superb acting.  Some industry observers have even called Martin “the male Nora Aunor.”

With their impressive body of work, Aunor and Martin are expected to deliver memorable performances as a mother and son who will bring the OF audience to a journey of life, love and forgiveness.  In the end, the question remains – who is truly worthy of being called “Padre de Pamilya?”

SandBox at Alviera opens country’s first archery challenge maze, Aqtiv Archery

After the very successful SandBox outdoor archery, Alviera recently presents the first ever archery challenge maze in the country. Country’s first archery challenge maze is where archers can run through a maze and face moving targets and obstacles, all under time pressure. This new SandBox attraction in Porac, Pampanga is called Aqtiv Archery and is expected to provide a whole new exciting outdoor experience.


The SandBox outdoor archery range, operated by Oculus Archery, has had over 5,000 visitors since the attraction opened last year. Children as young as 7 years old to some strong seniors, all new to the sport, have found their bliss in this outdoor feature as they learn the basics of archery in a stationery setup consisting of 12 lanes of targets.

Bloggers had to go back to the Alviera and experience the said challenge and my hubby is with me this time and he really had a great time at the Alviera, SandBox despite the very hot weather. From one challenge to another he hit all the target holes yeay..proud wifey here hehehe.. As for me, let's move on and discuss further the Aqtiv Archery hehe...


Aqtiv Archery participants are given a mission that must be completed within 3 to 5 minutes in the maze depending on the mission’s level of difficulty. Expect turns and twists and moving targets, like for example in the first mission, archers will face off against Monsters of the Wall. They will be on the run, which adds difficulty to the activity. And to keep the themed a more fun setting, participants will be wearing headgear.

The SandBox offers different archery packages but first-timers can try the 30-minute target archery first. It includes basic lessons, equipment and a stationary target. This is a pre-requisite before guests can try Aqtiv Archery, which requires basic archery knowledge that has to be combined with agility and hand-eye coordination. Archers who beat the set time for the challenge will be granted Archery Elite status and will win some tokens from Oculus Archery. Every end of the month, the top 5 fastest archers that completed the challenge will be showcased. 


Rate for Aqtiv Archery is at P250 per attempt on the challenge maze and a package rate of P400 includes 30-minute target archery.

Alviera and Oculus Archery will look into hosting tournaments in SandBox in the near future, in partnership with academic and sports institutions.

Converse Cons One Star World Tour video unveils



The first ever  Converse Cons One Star World Tour video viewing in the Philippines was recently happen at Centris, Quezon City. This is in partnership with one of the retailers Center of Gravity. 



The said viewing party is supported by Converse patronage, believers and media. From free snacks, exploring new Converse design and skaters, attendees are very mush overload with Converse treats before the unveiling of the video.

All eyes are on the screen when the 
Cons One Star World Tour video is playing because they saw how the Converse skate team tour video covering things that happened over 4 weeks in 4 regions (Europe,Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific,North America and Latin America).

The film was well executed and documented all over four regions. It was filmed and edited by Richard Quintero and Ben Chadourne, two known talents for directing and editing for big brands like Converse.

The said video captures every move of the Converse global ambassadors such as Zered Basset, Jason Jessee, Ben Raemers, Aaron Herrington,Louie Lopez, Kenny Anderson,Frank Gerwer, Sammy Baca, Eli Reed, Sean Pablo, Mike Anderson , Jake Johnson,Al Davis, Tom Remillard ,Don Nguyen, Bobby De Keyser,Sage Elsesser, Andrew Brophy, Jerome Campbell, Carlos Cardenosa, David Stenstrom and Remy Taveira.
