UNICEF and our country's Department of Social Welfare and Development, recently joined hand-in-hand to give the most affected region of the recent Super Typhoon Yolanda, notably Eastern Samar, a 153-M cash assistance through an Emergency Unconditional Cash Transfer Program (UCT). This supplemental program is a cash grant for the 4Ps family beneficiaries who were devastated by the Super typhoon Yolanda andi s aimed to assist beneficiaries in their immediate recovery and in sustaining their basic needs.

During the launching of the said program held at Eastern Samar State University in Guiuan, Eastern Samar, it was announced that almost 6,000 DSWD Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries from Eastern Samar especially those from the municipalities of Guiuan, Hernani, Mercedes, Balangkayan, and Salcedo; received an amount of 4,400Php for the month of July and will continue to receive the same amount of monthly cash grant until December of this year.

Charles Parks of UNICEF said:"The loss of property, savings, and livelihood as a result of Super Typhoon Yolanda, makes it difficult to provide basic necessities for their children. Through the collaboration of UNICEF (UCT) and DSWD (4Ps) we aim to reach more children and families in the most direct way possible, including advancing their rights to fulfill their immediate recovery needs."

"Hindi po talaga namin alam ang gagawin namin ng dumating at dumaan ang super typhoon na Yolanda sa lugar namin. Nagpapasalamat po kami at nandyan kaagad ang DSWD para tulungan kami at ngayon po sa UNICEF para sa aming pangangailangan na muling nakatayo at makamtan ang inaasam para sa aming mga pamilya," said Mrs. Grace Rapada, 4Ps and UNICEF UCT beneficiary.

Department of Social Welfare and Development Core Programs for Filipinos

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) recently conducted a Bloggers Forum focused on the core programs of the agency, held at Sulo Hotel, Quezon City. The press event was attended by the DSWD Secretary Corazon "Dinky" Soliman with two of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4P's) beneficiaries, Mrs. Rosalie Balayanan (Upi Maguindanao) and Mrs. Analiza Debang (Upi Maguindanao), bloggers and members of the press.

The DSWD has always been at the forefront in serving the poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the society. In the past years, the department has been implementing major projects geared towards empowering the poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged. Among these are the supplemental feeding, community driven development, community driven enterprise, social pension, conditional cash transfers, community-based and center based services. The government has poured-in so much resource with the end goal of empowering these sectors.

Leaded by the DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman, the forum started by reporting the accomplishments of the department which has serving 4,090,667 households (as of June) though the 4P's, a conditional cash transfer for human development (4P's) investing on health, education of poor households, particularly with children 0-18 years old.

More so, the increasing rate of compliance of 4Ps beneficiaries on health (pre and post natal care and 0-5 y.o. children must receive vaccines and check-ups and 6-14 y.o. deworming pills 2X/year), education (3-18 y.o. must enroll in school with 85% attendance per month) and family developmental session (teaching/sharing once a month) conditions.

On the other hand, the beneficiaries also have a chance to learn, be independent and empowered. The Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services-National Community-Driven Development Program (KALAHI-CIDSS-NCDDP), a poverty alleviation project of the agency that uses the community-driven development approached. It aims to reduce poverty by empowering communities and promoting good governance.

Also the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) which provides beneficiaries an entrepreneurial and employment opportunities. Remember my story about Mang Toto of GenSan HERE. Hence, Mrs. Balayanan, a day care worker which SLP provides her a day job for her family as well as community.

"Malaki po talaga ang pinagbago ng buhay namin mula ng natulungan kami ng gobyerno, walang wala po akmi nuon at hindi alam ang gagawin sa pamilya namin lalo na po at sunod-sunod ang kalamidad sa lugar namin, sa tilong po ng 4Ps regular ko pong napag-aaral ang mga aral ko at ngayon po ay may trabaho ako" Mrs. Balayanan shared.

Lastly, since Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) is a hot topic nowadays, DSWD clearly reported the detailed allotment of 1.97 Billion DAP that was given to the agency for the Filipinos in need.

5 Steps in Raising Kids with High “Financial Intelligence Quotient”

Saving is an important part of living, be it from food, water, things and most of all money for a better supply in the future. A person with financial literacy have a one step ahead compare to anyone. That's the reason why some parents are teaching their children even at a young age on how to save money and give importance to hard work.

Like for example Mrs. Rose Fres Fausto, who's teaching her three sons on how to deal with their money alongside or while teaching them how to read and write. In line with the launch of her newest book entitled The Retelling of The Richest Man in Babylon,” Fausto shares how she and her husband raised their children with high “FQ” or financial intelligence quotient.

Here are the 5 Steps in raising your kids with high FQ

1. Start them early. From the moment they were born, have them open their own savings accounts wherein they can deposit the money they receive. This is a great way for them to have knowledge about saving money on the bank with their names specially when they reach young adulthood.

2. Start small and show them how to grow their own money. They used easy-to-understand terms and easy-to-follow steps for their children:

Step 1: Save at least 20% of allowance and cash gifts and keep in a “treasure box” together
with a record.
Step 2: Once savings reaches PHP 500, deposit in an ATM account, which is called a “small
account.”
Step 3: When the amount goes beyond the minimum balance, transfer cash to a “big account”
or higher-yielding fixed-income instruments.

The kids also learned that the “small account “can only give very low interest because they can withdraw it anytime, while the “big account “yields better returns since they are giving the bank more time to invest their money. Another option to grow their money aside from “the big account” is investing in stocks, which they hold for the long term.

3. Time is money. They showed their children about the “magic” of compounding: how savings from their weekly allowance can turn them into teen-age millionaires, if they save religiously. In accumulating wealth, the biggest factor is time –and time is what the youth have an abundance of.

4. Make it a habit. It only takes 21 days to form a habit, especially if one has the will. They taught their sons to be conscious about their regular expenses or little things they buy, and prescribed a minimum 20 percent for savings. As their children got into the habit and earned more, they were also able to save up more.

5. Impart the values. Kids these days are exposed to a lot of peer pressure which is why it is important to raise children with a healthy self-esteem. They know they do not have to buy expensive things just to be “cool” or just to belong. When they go to a store, they do not tell them, “We’re not buying that because we don’t have the money.” This way, they will know that it is not only “having” or “not having” money that determines the purchase. Instead, it is about being in control of their money and not the other way around.

Rose Fres Fausto is a former investment banker who left her financially fulfilling career to become a full-time homemaker. Now that her sons Martin, Enrique and Anton are all grown up, she devotes her time to her advocacies: purposeful parenting and financial literacy. She is an online newspaper columnist, speaker, and author of the best-selling book, “Raising Pinoy Boys.” In partnership with PSBank, she published a special edition of her new book entitled “The Retelling of The Richest Man in Babylon,” a refreshing take on the 1926 classic by George Clason where the golden personal finance rule ‘Pay Yourself First’ originated. This time, the story is told in a language easy to understand, complete with illustrations and activities for kids from 1 to 92.

Ms. Fausto also shares that when teaching about money, parents should teach it with the right values. If what children do with and for money does not agree with their core values, no amount of money will make them happy as grown-ups. Moreover, it is about setting a good example as parents. Values are better caught than taught, and everything they learn in life starts at home.

It is indeed never too early or too late to start saving, as long as your children have the will to do what you have planned, and the patience and discipline to follow through. And to make savings even more exciting and rewarding, parents can accompany their kids to the nearest PSBank branch to open their PSBank Kiddie and Teens Savers Account. This not only makes their savings goal official, but will also help both parents and their children keep better track of their progress. The PSBank Kiddie and Teens Savers Accounts are for children 0-12 years of age and teens 13-18 years of age. It has no initial deposit or maintaining balance and the child or teen depositor automatically gets free personal accident insurance from Charter Ping An Insurance Corporation, with insurance coverage equivalent to five times the value of his average daily balance.

This tips and knowledge are very favorable not only for our children but also for the next generations of this country :) .

Bulthaup brand, values and philosophy

The Bulthaup name is synonymous with premium kitchens. Renowned for its uncompromising quality standards, the number-one high-end brand and independent family business is now in its third generation. True to its heritage, the company is still located in Aich and remains committed to quality products “made in Germany”. But it is also open to innovation and to a wider world, serving a global customer base from its Bavarian headquarters.

Boasting over 60 years’ experience, bulthaup employs approximately 1,000 highly skilled staff and works with exclusive dealers in around 50 countries worldwide. Driven by passion, the company remains committed to its mission: to reimagine kitchen architecture time and again to meet the needs of each unique customer – past, present and future.

Ever since Martin Bulthaup founded his furniture firm at its present-day location in 1949, bulthaup has continued to set milestones in kitchen history. Based on the company’s first kitchen sideboards, which met the highest standards in terms of material and build quality, kitchens such as Style 75, Type 1 and Concept 12 were launched in the 1970s – heralding the dawn of the kitchen systems era. At the time, bulthaup was already regarded as an innovation leader, thanks to intelligent installation methods and pioneering design language. From the outset, quality was the number-one priority.

Rejecting short-lived trends, bulthaup focused on function and durability. When Martin Bulthaup’s son Gerd took the reins in 1978, his understanding of architecture and design set the stage for a new chapter in the history of kitchens. Gerd Bulthaup collaborated closely with Otl Aicher, whose 1982 publication “The Kitchen is for Cooking” was written on the basis of research conducted for bulthaup.

Today, it still encapsulates the company philosophy. The kitchen’s journey from a purely functional area to a true living space had begun – and this shift in perspective positioned bulthaup as the market leader in premium, design-led kitchens. In the ‘80s and ‘90s, bulthaup launched a host of innovations on the basis of its defined philosophy, including the kitchen workbench (1988), the flexible, modular system 25 (1992) and the mobile system 20 (1997).

The new millennium welcomed a new trio: the bulthaup b3 kitchen system (2004), which has become a true classic, the minimalist bulthaup b1 kitchen system (2008) and the bulthaup b2 kitchen workshop (2008). Each one of these systems and innovations were instrumental in transforming the kitchen into a living space within a living space. Marc O. Eckert, the grandson of bulthaup’s founder, has been at the helm since 2010.

Today, the company continues to develop and evolve its kitchen philosophy with characteristic passion and commitment –and is set to convey it into the future, against the background of an ever-changing society.

Over 60 years of tradition creates experience and experience creates trust. Bulthaup’s total commitment to Germany as a base for the business contributes to that trust, while ensuring consistently high quality.

Today, bulthaup is synonymous with premium kitchens, as evidenced by countless awards and prizes. This is partly due to the company’s insistence on superior materials and craftsmanship; partly to a stream of innovations and exceptional design standards. But there is another reason: bulthaup products are never conceived in isolation. Every kitchen is seamlessly integrated into the building interior, into the living space. And bulthaup goes one step further–looking at kitchens as part of the bigger picture; within the context of the space around them, the architecture, and the project as a whole. This approach allows the company to fully understand its customers and partners, and to create a solution perfectly tailored to the needs of each one.

Right from the beginning, research and development have played a pivotal role at bulthaup. Research not only focused on materials and technology; it also looks at products and their function, with the aim of improving durability and creating a lasting value. Product development incorporates insights gained from extensive project experience, together with analysis of social change.

Shunning short-lived trends, bulthaup is dedicated to the concept of sustainability as a whole. The objective is to create timeless products. Being a premium brand means accepting responsibility towards people and the environment. While focusing on the needs and preferences of the individual, bulthaup never loses sight of its duty to the planet. Superior quality and timeless design translate into durability, lasting value and end-to-end sustainability.
