'They're Playing Our Song' is a romantic comedy musical from
Neil Simon's book which is based on the real-life relationship of Marvin
Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, who made the music and lyrics of the
play, respectively. It has the complete ingredients that will make for good
entertainment- great music, funny and witty dialogues, and a delightful love
story.
The main characters in the play are Vernon Gersch and Sonia
Walsk who were brought together to make a perfect song, but didn't notice that
in the process their lives were slowly interwoven in love despite each other's
glaring disparity in character and attitude. Such opposing personality
differences create funny situations that makes the play as lively and vibrant
as can be. Vernon's simplicity versus Sonia's colorful staff and then Vernon's
aloofness and focus contrasted with Sonia's disorganized and distracted
behavior make the play a study in contrasts, too. How the two reconcile with a
kiss is a cause for wonder but at the same time is a wonderful example of how
love conquers all.
Nikki Gil as Sonia dominated the stage with an inspired 70's
fashion and with her beautiful voice especially when she sings 'I Still Believe
In Love'. Likewise, Lorenz Martinez as Vernon, delivers the sophisticated type
of man yet showed clearly how he fell in-love with Nikki's character. I also
liked their so-called inner voices which added to the comedic touch on the
stage and which were played by Anna Santamaria, Jill Pena, Peachy Atilano, Reb
Atadero, Noel Rayos, and James Stacey. Everytime they pop up on stage, I can't
help but laugh.
