Kindergarten is a form of education for young children that serves as a transition from home to a more formal schooling, it literally means "children's garden" in German. Children are taught to learn and develop basic skills and thinking by playing and interacting with other. According to Friedrich Froebel, a German educator who introduce and named this kind of training, education should begun by gratifying and cultivating the normal aptitude for exercise, observation, imitation, construction and also PLAY which is more preferable for children of age 5-6 years old. Playing for children makes learning more fun and enjoyable, with toys they can create world and imaginations triggered and can learn to share with other.
That's why in order to promote Universal Kindergarten (first phase of Department of Education main reform agenda - K to 12) in all public schools nationwide starting June 2011. The ABS- CBN Integrated Public Service, headed by Fr. Tito Caluag was teamed up with the Department of Education (DepEd) for a multimedia awareness campaign. This way the public specially the parents would know and be more aware about Universal Kindergarten program that requires all public schools to give kindergarten education to five-year old students so that they are more prepared to enter Grade One the following year.Through a series interviews, featured segments and public service announcements using different types of media, ABS-CBN and DepEd aims to inform everyone about the changes that are about to come in the public school curriculum.
In line with this, they will also launch a nationwide Toy Drive campaign that will encourage the public, especially kids, to show their love and support for other children by donating toys and other educational materials. The goal is to collect toys for the 1.9 million kindergarten students that are expected to enroll in the 38,000 schools and day care centers nationwide.
DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro says that "Given this big number of expected kindergarten students, we are more inspired to achieve milestones in the pilot implementation of the universal kindergarten program. That is why, once again, we ask for everyone's support by donating any educational material that can help us make early schooling more meaningful". ABS-CBN Integrated Public Service head Fr. Tito Caluag said through the project, they will be able to instill the value of generosity to children and groom them into becoming advocates of charity and creative learning. "This our way of taking part in nation building. By nurturing young minds, we will be able to develop good and responsible citizens" he said.
Consequently, ABS-CBN and DepEd formalized their partnership and signed a memorandum of agreement for this project yesterday, Monday May 9 at Chef Jessie in Rockwell Club. Moreover actor Xian Lim is part of this advocacy and promised to commit himself for the project. Fr. Caluag said the late AJ Perez, supposed to be one of the spokespersons for the toy drive.
